LAS CRUCES – Doña Ana County will offer certified Mental Health First Aid Training to help the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance abuse disorders. The program is offered at no cost.

The interactive 12-hour course is an overview of mental illnesses and substance-abuse disorders that gives participants an opportunity to learn how to recognize risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, understanding their impacts and identifying common treatments.

Anyone who takes the 12-hour course will be certified as a Mental Health First Aider and will learn a five-step action plan that includes skills, resources and knowledge to help those in crisis connect with the appropriate care.

Training is offered at the following times and locations:
* May 10 -11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Doña Ana County Government Center, 845 N. Motel Blvd., Las Cruces
* May 14-15, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Vado/Del Cerro Community Resource Center, 180 Le Fe Avenue, Vado.
