Global Knowledge report on jobs, salaries, and training in IT. Has section on certification trends. Interaction between enterprise and education a sector to watch during education revolution. Certification has an inside track over “degrees” in the long run for many types of learning. It’s much more flexible and adaptable to new forms cloud based DLE.

Speaking of trends, Todd Dickson in the LC Bulletin continues to crank out some of the best journalism in Mesilla Valley, and has an article in recent issue on some trends at NMSU. Might be relevant to this topic.

Enrollment is stagnant at best for NMSU system the last few years, and NMSU “figured out” that the problem for many who dropped out was financial. Bernadette Montoya the VP of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management…(interesting job title) was quoted as saying: “One way the university can help these students is to offer more online degree programs, especially at the undergrad level”.

(assumption obviously that those online programs would be offered at lower cost, something that AFAIK doesn’t occur now)

Doesn’t take a graduate in Electrical Engineering to figure out there’s got to be a correlation between enrollment, and the cost of the “product”. Especially if there’s an alternative with a lower cost out there, and as we know, that’s a trend too. In the same story, it’s noted that the NMSU Regents are contemplating a tuition increase.

Also, as we know, NMSU has been a party to the group working under the leadership of Carnegie Mellon with other land grant universities to support 101 level courses with online adaptive learning. (support as in “replace”).

One would think that at some point, the financial pressures would start to impact the  university president’s salary and perk packages. And put pressure on those fringe Div1 athletic programs that are losing huge amount of money on the football program. (NMSU being one of those).

Just part of the ongoing adjustments of the university and college business model we have discussed before. Bizarre that in US, the athletic programs often are a huge part of the overall educational business. Don’t think this is the case overseas. Will this factor play large as US competes with foreign cloud based educational businesses?
