Interesting article here on the rise of “competence-based” testing or education or whatever it is.
Belive me the hucksters can smell the money!

This is a complicated topic. Competency based education has been around for a long time. In some ways previous uses of this term might be equivalent to vocational training. Kris is much more knowledgeable about how these terms are used than I, but in some ways what Tempo is doing might be categorized as “competency based education”. Learning measurable skills or capabilities or competencies if you will.
Certainly as before, there’s an element of rip off in some non standard educational offerings by some. OTOH, there’s a fundamental and necessary re examination of what is the way to “accredit” learning in the brave new world of different kinds of DLE available.
That’s what I’d keep my eye on, as it’s extremely disruptive to the status quo, which is as we know a huge sector of US economy. There will be a long list of “issues” to be resolved, and the legitimacy of any form of accreditation will be up for review. As Gary points out, that will leave some doors open for shysters, as always happens during any big disruptive changes in the status quo.
But there’s a prize here, and that’s the ability of US to enable/ create the kinds of workers needed in today’s, and tomorrow’s, workplace. These changes will offer opportunities to move in that direction. Albeit with some false starts, and wrong turns, included in the process.
BTW, congrats to Kris whose daughter’s wedding is taking place in Seattle
