Daniels Fund is in the news today…more on that below…but I came across this page on their focus for grants in NM… narrowing to education from cradle to grave. They kind of reach out to you (don’t call us)…once you’ve established a reputation…but perhaps good to file in our archive nonetheless.

I got to their site reading an article in the ABQ Journal on Carruthers and the NMSU presidents job. Oddly enough, it mentioned that Carruthers is presently involved in a $250,000 annual grant from Daniels related to teaching ethics in NM. My personal experience with Carruthers has been mostly in the setting of New Mexico First events; at which he presented himself convincingly (to me) as a non partisan supporter of quality public discourse.

The story itself is about how Carruther’s ethics were in question after it was revealed he spent 5 years heading up a “front group” for tobacco and other industries that wanted to cast doubt on reliability of scientific research.

Which is a fascinating set of issues all by itself, and since Mr. Carruthers seems soon to be NMSU president, something we may or may not encounter more of down the road. Certainly ethics is a part of learning, and so is the value of scientific research, both of which PSA strongly supports as basis for any DLE.
