Story in LCSN on a “place to do innovation” at NMSU. Every little bit helps and this sounds kuhl, although the actual funds expended to create this space seem more at the symbolic and “token” level of support. Be also nice if, say, this innovation space came equipped with powerful interface with state supercomputer, for running iterations of what happens when “you try to do this”.

Or maybe one can get a lot more from 120K these days in the way of a well equipped innovation space than one might imagine. “Lean startup” after all is just a table big enough for five guys, and their computers, right?

Concept is a bit confusing as the thought does occur…isn’t the whole university supposed to be a “innovation space” for students, and faculty alike? OTOH, directing your robot with your cell phone sounds like a “solid” idea, and worth a suite of rooms to play with and see where it goes.

So may many more “innovation spaces” bloom on campus, and elsewhere here. Would be good to hear Virgin Galactic and other commercial space jumping in with innovation spaces in the region too.

The university, along with members of chip maker Intel Corporation, unveiled the new suite of rooms on the third floor of the Foreman Engineering Complex on campus on Wednesday. Intel pitched in $70,000 and NMSU added $50,000 to make the space a reality.

Brian Rashap with Intel said he was impressed with the Aggie Innovation Space and its equipment, including 3-D printers, robotics devices and others.

“This was just a closet the last time I was here,” he said.
