Rebecca Galves, CS outreach at NMSU, recently met with PSA, and discussed “LiveCode” as a coding platform that supports App development, and that she has ongoing programs that work on teaching young people this “language”. The two she mentioned, Young Women in Computing, and SuperComputer Challenge, help students get familiar with, and then develop trial apps, using LiveCode.

Rebecca stated LiveCode is Open Source, and supports all mobile platforms, such as iOS and Android OS and others, and is designed to be “easy” to learn for youth. She will be conducting workshops over the summer, “camps”, for kids here to get started with LiveCode. Here’s some links to LiveCode pages, tutorials, etc.

PSA has been contemplating use of Lynda.com for T3 Youth Brigade learning support, and it so happens there’s a Lynda.com course for coding for youth. It doesn’t seem to mention “LiveCode” but probably a good general introduction to coding for kids nonetheless. Includes some intro to “learning theory” too.
