Lou Ellen Kay and her husband Vince Gutschick started a school for gifted kids in Las Cruces called Las Cruces Academy in 2009, and it’s been “progressing since then” after humble beginnings. Still tiny though with only 36 students.

Almost literally a “bootstrap” startup financed mostly by Lou Ellen Kay’s small inheritance, it does apparently what she set out to do, provide learning opportunities for gifted kids and train the next generation of leaders.

They add a year at a time, and are now up to offering sixth grade, with hopes to eventually also include HS. They are not a charter school. One wonders what restrictions that allows them to avoid, or other reasons they would have for NOT being a charter school. A charter school can be run by a non profit for example.

Not sure what their stance on Ed Tech is, or how much they incorporate that into their curriculum. One would think to provide the learning opportunities of individual exploration to their kids, they would be all over cloud tools for learning. This LCSN story doesn’t mention that at all.
