What is a “Community School”? Essentially a repurposing of school plant and facilities to include much broader range of services than just the class curriculae.
The vision is to bring improved access to health and social services, youth and community development and educational opportunities into neighborhoods around Las Cruces by converting each of the district’s 41 school sites into community schools, open to everyone — all day, every day, including nights and weekends.
This multipurpose use of school buildings is something PSA has supported in terms of turning schools into public access points for broadband.
It’s also consistent with the idea of future use of schools when actual classroom learning no longer has to take place in a physical classroom. Under those circumstances the schools, which are located in every community, provide a physical place for a lot of services, including some of a DIY type, to occur.
And still provide a “safe place” for kids to be monitored and supervised during the day. So it’s possible to “see” this “community schools” idea as innovative and a foreshadowing of what the future will look like in a mobile age.
