Workshop Descriptions

Note: Each workshop is one week long. Between each workshop there will be a three-week break to give you time to complete some self-guided research and reflect on your learning.

 

Social Media for Online Education I: Foundations
Research about social media in education emphasizes key considerations for using social media in education as related to social media tools, teaching and learning methods, and assessment strategies that can improve learning effectiveness and increase student satisfaction. In this workshop, you will explore relevant research in this area, explain its relevance to your teaching audience, and develop your social media presence for online teaching.

Objectives:

  • Develop online persona and social media presence
  • Evaluate and analyze research and legal issues about social media in education to develop effective methods for online classrooms

 

Social Media for Online Education II: Teaching and Learning Strategies
Using social media for teaching and learning activities can be exciting and intimidating. By participating in activities that model strategies you can use in your own courses, you can develop confidence with social media tools and explore methods for teaching effectiveness. In this workshop, you will explore learning designs incorporating hashtags, social networks, media creation and curation tools, wikis, blogs and more. Using these models and the support of your peers, you’ll develop your own learning activities and assessment strategies for use in the online classroom.

Objectives:

  • Explore and evaluate effectiveness of social media tools and learning activities for use in online education
  • Develop learning activities and assessment strategies for the online classroom incorporating social media

 

Social Media for Online Education III: Learner Support and Engagement
Social media can be a powerful resource for online courses and programs toward increasing learner engagement, retention and success. In this workshop, you will explore techniques and strategies that increase learner participation, involvement and success. Using these as models, you will create resources to support and engage learners in your own course(s) and/or program(s).

Objectives:

  • Identify and explain relevant engagement strategies as they relate to course and program delivery
  • Produce artifacts evidencing ability to support students in social media
