Teleconferencing is much too long a word to survive common use. Videoconferencing is much too long also. Maybe we could try Videcon?

As the WFH, LFH, HFH, “revolution” continues apace, big Tech/ Social Media/ Telecom…is going all out for market share for Videcon platforms and applications. Announcements seem to come almost everyday about something new and improved, and/or cheaper.  Here’s an article noting Google’s attempt to stay in the race, with free meeting access, and unlimited meeting times. And a second article about Googe’s improvement of a codec they use, called av1. (kudos to Gary for av1 link)

Zoom’s business model has some free teaser elements, but it quickly ramps up to pricey, and then “ridiculous” as one adds features and capability. Admittedly some need the features and advance capabilities, but generally platforms exhibit feature creep, where the pricier parts get undercut by competitors who offer similar for less..

One might reasonably expect these videcon platform wars to continue for some time to come. There’s plenty of room for improvement in user friendly interfaces…but OTOH, videcon as tech people know, is anything but simple and user friendly under the surface. Resolution formats, Frame rates, Bitrates and Codecs are just the top layers. But there’s also inherent problems in videcon for groups that are more social than technical, such as how do we get that person to stop hogging the mic?

Some have projected that 5G might bring ubiquitous VR…which might make for some new dynamism of presence, and perhaps “more fun” meetings.
