Amazon’s health ambitions are only growing — and every move it makes is putting the rest of the industry on notice.
The opportunities for the company to expand its footprint in the $3.5 trillion health care industry are extensive. Covid-19 saw Amazon gain a foothold in the diagnostics space with its Diagnostic Development Initiative, which positioned AWS as the computing backbone not only for Covid-19 research, but for genetic research and diagnostics as well.
This is to say nothing of Amazon’s aggressive move into the pharmacy space where it hopes to provide “better selection, better convenience, and better prices,” according to TJ Parker, the vice president of pharmacy at the company.
Now, Amazon is working to build an even bigger presence by expanding its Amazon Care business nationwide, a play that has put the rest of the telemedicine industry on notice. This month, Amazon Care signed its first enterprise client, a sign of the company’s plans to start selling health care to other customers. Meanwhile, Amazon, along with other telehealth companies, is embarking on a lobbying effort to secure its interests on Capitol Hill.
