Filming of large scale/ large budget Hollywood productions in Las Cruces has been gaining momentum in recent years, due in large part to substantial NM state subsidies for production. The subsidies are in a range of 25-35%. Those shot in southern NM such as Las Cruces get an added 5% “rebate” of production costs beyond what is available for productions elsewhere in the state.
Now, those local production incentives are further enhanced by economic development funding from both NM state government, and local municipal government, as described in two stories below. These are to subsidize job creation, and in this case said to be a deal for a minimum of 100 new full time permanent jobs.
While there have been local film production studio projects announced in the past, and a few that have gotten at least partly off the ground, this 828 Productions “deal” includes a number of extant fairly large structures that come as-is usable for film studio work. There’s additional vacant land in the area as well.
And of course, a large part of the appeal of film productions in NM comes from the expansive areas of mountains and deserts, much of which is absent of signs of civilization, and is often a fairly short trip beyond city limits.
