“Code Interpreter” sounds wonky, true enough. It’s just one of the new AI plugins which are adding new capabilities to ChatGPT and other similar AI daily.

It’s not unusual, for example, to discover that Google has released multiple plugins and added features to their generative AI versions all on the same day… and then more that same week. To say nothing about all the third party plugins being released every day.

One needs to be on one’s toes because it’s not always apparent at first glance all that the new plugins can do. Such is life on the J-Curve.

“Code Interpreter” is so much more than it might initially sound like because:

Code Interpreter can turn anything we ask it to do into Python, which gives it access to amazing computational abilities.

There’s one more important factor here… ChatGPT has enabled Code Interpreter to read files that users upload, and it supports pretty much any file formats you can think of: TXT, PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, PNG, MP4, AVI, CSV, JSON, XML, XLS, XLSX, CPP, PY, HTML, PDF, DB, SQLite, etc. (Source: Beebom).

The implications of what this can do are ginormous. No doubt there will have to be some limitations on amount and size of the files uploaded, per time period/ or per $$$ paid…because the amount of web traffic this could entail would surely overwhelm server capacities.

At least that’s the conventional wisdom, and the achilles heel of Generative AI…the sheer size of the data files and the sheer power required to provide adequate levels of “token processing capability.” is an imposing challenge to get through.

(The Code Interpreter is currently as of July 19 in Alpha, and only a select portion of the ChatGPT Plus subscribers can access the plugin in the plugin store.)
