OpenAI commits $50M in funding and tools to leading institutions.

We already know OpenAI has partnered with Khan Academy for “KhanAmigo”, an AI tutoring tool for K-12. Now OpenAI has announced partnerships with higher education with an “NextGenAI” tool for college research and education. This follows other ongoing OpenAI partnerships in EdTech.

In January 2024, Arizona State University became the first higher education institution to partner with OpenAI, introducing ChatGPT Enterprise to explore the potential of generative AI in enhancing teaching, learning, and research . This collaboration led to the activation of over 200 AI-driven projects across multiple departments within months .

Now with NextGenAI the following Universities are also partnered with OpenAI:

NextGenAI’s founding partners are Caltech, the California State University system, Duke University, the University of Georgia, Harvard University, Howard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Michigan, the University of Mississippi, The Ohio State University, the University of Oxford, Sciences Po, Texas A&M University, as well as Boston Children’s Hospital, the Boston Public Library, and OpenAI.

There are other AI companies and other Universities and Colleges and USPS Districts that are likely to form partnerships to develop AI for learning. Of note, as the current Administration works to defund the US Department of Education, such partnerships will of necessity change in terms of who is providing the funding, and who is “choosing the project goals”.

Kudos to Gary for the link catch.
