As to employment in the age of AI, no one actually knows, but there are two chief speculations.
One is that people will not be “having employment” or “earning pay “for work.
The other is that despite jobs “going away’ as happens in every big technological change, new jobs will come along that fit the new economy, and while the disruption maybe a huge challenge, in the end the economy looks similar to today in that people are “having jobs and earning pay for work”.
David Shapiro expresses ideas about “the future of work in an AI age” using what he calls the Post-Labor Economy. He recently posted a sort of grab bag of his current thinking on that topic in a YouTube presentation for which we’ve asked ChatGPT o3 to help us understand and “unpack”.
Here’s the links to his two part YouTube on Post-Labor Economics.
Here’s an analysis of the transcript of these YouTubes by ChatGPT o3.
