The problem is perhaps that they didn’t train the trainer well enough. As Kris and Liz and I learned in the NMSU OTL course, online learning is a different breed of cat. And many professors already “know how to teach the course thank you very much, and have a hard time seeing the need for new methods.
Especially with discussion. But maybe the Coursera model needs some work when it comes to the SLC…Social Learning Construct…
Also, the previous model of a course serving the same needs for all the students isn’t going to work with open enrollment, and tens of thousands. Different students will have different levels of involvement….and as Kris mentioned a lot while taking the NMSU OTL course, different students have varying interests in learning collaboratively, or in taking part in discussions.
They need a very good DLP….Dynamic Learning Plan…to make the course adjust to the student in real time. And to account for different intentions, such as do I want a certificate, or am I just “sampling”…
We tend to have different approaches to “information” in our internet lives…a lot of which we just “browse”, some of which we “currate”, some of which we really want to learn and keep in our head.
