Adobe Connect Guide in a mp4 video format hosted on our site. As another test of mp4. One wonders if this loads as slowly as the SLC QT .mov video from Kris.

We have  storage at HostGator of 20,000 MB in our “unlimited storage” account. Or “only” about 20GB.

Video files can add up quickly if they are long things like a full length film or tv show. But we have room for a fair number of shorter clips in that 20GB…especially after periodically removing “older backups” which are now running about 500MB each for what we’ve supposedly already have on our site.

Clearly we’ll want to host video elsewhere a lot of the time…and link to external rather than our HostGator site….but for some stuff, maybe fit the video needs of a whole DLE on our site if we need to.

Here’s the original of this post which is from July 6 2012 when we were obvious very curious about using Adobe Connect for our DLE or other purposes.

Adobe Connect one example of, well maybe somebody else knows whether to call it a LMS or a CMS or whatever. But a “online space” where a lot of learning activities can take place in a group synchronous, and also asynchronous manner. Kind of like a webinar, but maybe more robust.

This is from a learning site, one of the intro “video lectures”. Posted here for strictly preview and non commercial purposes.

Adobe Connect would be a very costly way to present courses, for anything smaller than a medium sized business or institution. What we want to take away from this, are the kinds of activities it supports, so that we can figure out how to provide those activities through other than Adobe means.

White boards being an especially interesting capability. They now come in fancy digital incarnations for the classroom, but we want a online version.

My holy grail is a game/social activity that derives initial assessment and evaluative information about the student, while it “breaks the ice” and begins to create social media webs that students can find a place in.

Gets the student over the initial “what is this, and do I like it” questions, while at the same time helping to construct a customized learning environment based on the students input and responses.

A non academic feel is important, as is a welcoming and entertaining vibe that matches the students “comfort zone”.

At the same time as we know, certain tasks have to be accomplished to “set up” the following course materials according to what the student knows, and what their learning and “online” style is. Something appealing, exciting, and even entertaining…while at the same time covering topics and addressing material that are core learning objectives.
