NMSU board of regents announced both a new Chancellor and a new President for the university. Previously there was one person who was designated as both chancellor and president. Now there’s two. The new Chancellor Dan Arvizu, in particular, is quite an interesting choice.
Arvizu presently serves as senior advisor to the Emerson Elemental practice of Emerson Collective, whose stated mission is to restore and strengthen the symbiosis between humanity and nature.
Having no idea what the “Emerson Elemental practice of Emerson Collective” might be…I looked it up. It appears to be a kind of think tank for implementing some of the American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson’s philosophy. Which on the surface appears to indicate that the new Chancellor is a visionary, and grounded in philosophy that supports ecological perspectives. But as the article says, Dan is also very “plugged in” to Silicone Valley.
Dan Arvizu seems like a tremendous visionary choice at a time when so much of education needs to be rethought, and re-envisioned. PSA wishes him well in his new challenge.
