This website explores the concept of a community school answering questions about what it is, why it is, how it works, and what are the schools results. Is it a transformative approach to education? The website provides some national examples of schools that work. Las Cruces, New Mexico is engaged in a community school model, as recently posted by John.
A poll done by GBA Solutions shows that 4 out of 5 people polled are excited about the community schools concept. In the poll the model is described by saying that “schools would serve as community hubs, providing health and social services, youth community development, parental education, as well as academics for students. Community schools integrate high-quality dynamic curriculum with after-school and summer enrichment programs, ensuring that every student and their family gets the opportunity to succeed no matter what zip code they live in.”
This link gives us the sort of comprehensive “way in” to all that Community Schools can mean, or be. With so many changes and challenges to accommodate, having so many different examples working on “the problem” is a very good thing. Similar to the idea that charter schools are for experimenting to derive new and innovative solutions.
