For whoever: short step by step on linking text to a URL. Any word or sentence or phrase can be connected to a link.
1) put the URL you want to link to, onto your clipboard (copy)
2) type in the text you want to become an active link into the text box.
3) highlight the text… again, it could be a word, a phrase or a sentence. But probably not a paragraph… unless that’s really desirable for some reason.
4) click the chain link button, or use Alt/shift/a…and paste the URL in, click “open in new window”…you’re done.
John, Thanks for sending further instruction on text links. It would be helpful to have all these tech tips in one place with appropriate tags so I can find them later. I’m adding the instructions here for now:
A few things to try…
Open a post where the links do work, and Edit it, and play around with it to see how it works. Reverse engineering. What a young child does when it takes things apart, can work for adults too.
Refer to earlier “how to” from me in emails and posts if you can find them….
It can be a bit tricky getting the right link for reposts which link to a uploaded doc, or as yet unuploaded doc. The media Library is searchable.
When you find the document you want, or upload it from you own hard drive or off the web to your hard drive…. or wherever it’s coming from… select the document in the library.
Then click “edit” for the document, and a new page will open for editing media.
Then over on the far right, you will find a few things under “Save”
What you are looking for is the FILE URL.
Copy that to your clipboard.
Then when you have your text (can be any text whatsoever) ready to be linked to in your post, select it.
Click on the chain link button, or Alt/Shift/a, and past in the FILE URL into the spot in the popup box that we are so familiar with now…and check the open in new window box.
Update post/ publish post
You’re done.
Also perhaps confusing is that some file types don’t open in a new window as yet. We know that PDF will do that. It seems that Word Docs won’t, or I may have forgotten the trick for that….but I will be researching that stuff in the next few days to help more documents/ media open in a new window for us. If they don’t open in a new window, then they will auto download when we click on the link in the post.
I’m not sure if the search functions will return words and phrases from the comments, or not. Probably would.
I agree that Tech Tips might be a category to add to our choices. Maybe someone will be able to kind of round them up someday using search, and organize a bit.

Thanks John, that will make the links look much more “professional”.
This link which is in our media library was not working for me, so unable to add text link.
