Not sure if we have this one, but I thought John would like the connection between Hawaii surfers and education.
I liked the idea that learning “how to join a guild or community of practice” might be something new to most learners. While it happens naturally here for the surfers, can we help it along with other areas of interest.
BTW, check out the producer of the video, Pearson Foundation.
Also like idea of a “guild” or “community of practice”…in today’s world a MOOC or a smaller sized mob of learners can self organize around a common learning interest or activity, or practice.
I like the idea of the focus group as kind of the germ or seed for such an elaboration taking place. Anything that focuses interests and inclinations to some form of interaction can lead to a move fully formed exchange, and the beginnings of a SLC.
In the past, education often relied on institutions to create the structures of learning…in the future, it may well be communities of natural interaction and interest that form the backbone of learning structures.
Already happens online for many skills, such as gardening, cooking, but soft skills like parenting, and healthcare too.
