Support for charter schools in the NM state legislature is precarious at present, as the NM House tied in a recent vote to institute a moratorium on new charter schools until 2020.
The sponsor of the bill, Rep. Christine Trujillo, D-Albuquerque, is a retired teacher and former president of the American Federation of Teachers, New Mexico. The voting today was mostly along party lines despite both sides saying they support charter schools.
PSA hopes that the actual benefits or detriments of the policies involved would be foremost in the decision making political process. National partisan battles can override making decisions based on what’s the best policy.
If we set aside partisan differences, should that be somehow feasible, what would the parents and children and all those stakeholders responsible for quality education for all US kids come up with? One can imagine some very good results from such an approach.
