Bill Gates just wrote a long essay on where he thinks the development of AI is currently trending towards, and the concerns he has about the negative potentials that could come to pass.

He also talks about the positives of AI distribution and widely based use, and frames his concerns as (paraphrasing) “we can avoid the negatives to a certain extent if we enact regulatory constraints, as well as constraints and guardrails created by the AI vendors themselves.”
One example of the latter, META has… after losing court cases over lack of protections for under 18 users of social media,… initiated new guardrails that include age filtering for certain types of social media access. IOW, it can be done, but it generally takes concerted pressure to make guardrails “somehow newly doable” by big Tech vendors.
Perhaps reflecting the current AI Pushback, many of the takeaways from reviews in the press of Gates essay, tend to emphasize that Gates is noting the negatives with more concern.
But those reviews have often skipped over the AI use positives that Gates states are not being included in AI evaluations.
