Marshall McLuhan was a fountain of ideas that seemed to never run dry. So there’s a huge volume of “things to think about” in all his books, interviews, etc…for starters.
But then there’s also his writing and thinking style to get up to speed with, and he’s often careening down the thought highway at a breakneck pace, so that isn’t easy either. McLuhan was a scholar of a number of “fields of study”, one being the medieval era, and another being the writer James Joyce. Some have compared McLuhan’s writing to Joyce’s style of densely packed meanings and seemingly unlimited allusions.
Here’s a link to a collection of McLuhan’s quotes, organized chronologically, which is probably as good as any way to organize them. He liked to describe the organization of his ideas in written form as “mosaics”. While McLuhan garnered his share of literary critics who simply don’t get it, and from a strict literary perspective it often does seem exaggerated or too full of absolutes. But the value is in using his writing as a jumping off point, into the “new place”, using his aphorisms as signposts of where the useful awareness might be hidden from our view. But accessible if we know how, and where, to look.
