OpenAI is moving on several fronts to make ChatGPT a platform where people go to do a variety of tasks, not just “naked inference” queries.

A huge part of that OpenAI effort is “Apps in ChatGPT” where the “action” takes place within the ChatGPT “envelope” but is powered by all manner of 3rd party apps and tools. For learning, that can be very big.

Perhaps not yet one ring to rule them all …but one place to “go” and “master” and have “secure access” as well as hoped for secure data flows.

For learning with non adults, a very data secure platform is a basic requirement, but a real challenge to accomplish, especially when AI platforms are looking for ROI at maximum levels, and especially when private personal data is so very valuable to the same tech companies. Coursera is generally for college students, but OpenAI has already been in a partnership with Khan Academy to produce Khanmigo for K012.

Leah Belsky bemoans “struggling with distribution” and her implication is that OpenAI can handle that for students, teachers, parents and school districts. But of course, the devil is the details, and data security for students will be a high hurdle in and on the way to ubiquitous distributions.

For the edu ecosystem, this is a milestone moment. Over the past year I’ve met so many founders, educators, and startups building powerful AI learning tools – but struggling with distribution. Learning is a top use case in ChatGPT. Now we can bring these new experiences to the +800M people using ChatGPT every week.

I’m especially excited about the Coursera app. Some of the best learning happens when human expertise and AI work together. Now you can ask, “Coursera, teach me data analytics?” and instantly see a relevant video from a world class teacher, course info, and a link to dive deeper. Learners can interrogate the video & ask questions – right from within Chat.

This is an important step toward our broader goal: making ChatGPT a tool that helps learners everywhere unlock their potential. Huge thanks to Greg Hart, Tim Hannan, and the team for bringing this vision to life (and hustling like crazy!!)

More edu partners to come soon…. Early partners also include Booking.com, Canva, Figma, Expedia Group, Spotify, and Zillow.
