Here we have a teacher of the year leaving the country so he can focus on teaching and not wear so many other support hats. Looks like a community school at an international level. Always good to know what the teacher thinks.

We know that some public school teachers are overburdened by the amount of work involved, and the stress and frustrations of large class sizes. In this much lauded teacher’s decision we do hear him talk about how many responsibilities he had, and how he felt limited in his ability to teach his students the way he desired to.
One guesses that his new position at the school in Dubai has much more support in the areas he felt required to fill in for. IOW, adequate staffing, which as we know is often lacking especially in the poorer schools.
Remains to be seen how fulfilled he will be in his new position, because wearing a lot of hats seems to be something he at least sometimes chose rather than was obligated to do. (“announce the football games*). And generally, a community school might involve teachers wearing a lot of hats…although hopefully sharing that work with the whole community involved.
He might miss that, while he won’t miss being overburdened by class sizes too big to give the individual attention he desires to do. Also in this case, he says he was looking for a Muslim majority nation to live in for himself and his wife. We don’t know how much of a factor that was in his decision to leave the US. Presumably there are at least some schools in the Seattle area that would offer him reduced class size and fewer commitments of his time?
