This article brings to mind that challenge we face to accommodate the ideals of American Public Education which strives to form a basis for shared beliefs, ideals, knowledge, and culture that enable effective government and cohesive social fabric and a dynamic economy that benefits all.
If we do so by overlooking or repressing the many and varied cultures and beliefs that our citizens strive to pursue and establish, we further the beliefs by some that the only way to “be themselves” is outside the mainstream institutions in an isolated separate and hermetically sealed enclave.
Who gets to say what’s established knowledge? How can we come to a commonality on facts where no one is believing things like “the earth is flat”?
On the one had there have to be standards to form a common basis of knowledge. OTOH, standards need to accommodate differences too. That’s an enormous challenge, that we might never fully achieve, but a local institution that provides a commonality that “works”, such as Community Schools might be able to do, could help.
