Why are multiple visions of the interaction and development between humans and AI important, significant, and meaningful?
The evolution of Homo Sapiens gives us some clues. According to one science backed view, somewhere around 200K years ago, the then current physiology provided a basis for advances in human thinking, socialization, and resultant innovation.
Groups from different ecological niches interacted and learned from each other the latest iteration of things like bows and arrows. Which required many small innovations to add up to the most advanced lethal hunting device.
That device also lead to more protein from hunting, and more protein is often cited as part of how our brains developed new capabilities.
In other words there was a process that supported change in both our thinking and in our innovation of new technology. Which is, in important ways, a model or explanation for what is going on since… with the long long road of technological improvements mankind has been on.
Talk about out an L graph…we’ve been building momentum iteration by iteration for a new leap in thinking for what, 200 eons?
This time not so dependent on the organization and size of our brain tissue, or the size of our skull containing it, but instead co-dependent on the size of the LLM, and the number of GPU in the Data Center.
The process of multiple iterations by different tribes and the cross fertilization of advances continues today. It’s just that now some of the tribes involved are AI creatures, entities…some sort of being… coming into its own as we write.
And that’s why we need awareness of all those visions. Because humans and AI will be in rhetorically myriad different developmental circumstances, approaches and types of tinkering. … that will create a myriad of new variations upon which to build and develop …taking us in many more than our current inventory of approaches.
That’s just what humans do; have always done. Having just one vision was never the Homo sapiens way.
