Routing Around Systems: NM example: PED taking 40% of NM state budget annually

Education of our children is both critically important and very expensive. PSA has noted periodically how expenditures in the US for Education (and for Healthcare too) make up huge parts of overall government spending. See documents below.

Federal debt continues to accumulate at a multitrillion-dollar annual pace; it’s dangerously destabilizing the US dollar as core currency for the World, and borrowed costs become harder to sustain as interest rates rise on US Bonds. At some point it seems inevitable that costs for both education and healthcare in the US will be re-examined in terms of what alternatives exist.

PSA has envisioned, for two decades now, a time when technology can greatly reduce costs for both healthcare and education. That time seems nearly upon us; where both can be restructured to provide better results with less cost through implementation of new tools riding broadband access and developments of AI.

Disruption is underway at state capitals around the country, as support for Medicaid from the Federal Government is greatly reduced through last year’s “big beautiful bill”. At the same time, educational costs continue to increase as enrollments decrease, while powerful AI in education tools rapidly develop.

A lot of change needs to occur before those costs can be reduced and controlled. A huge part of those costs are salaries and benefits for people working in those fields.

Reducing costs would inevitably involve huge numbers losing their current “jobs” and/or having their jobs redefined. PSA needs to research how that could possibly be accomplished without great social costs.

If it is in fact politically and ethically possible, it will require creative solutions far beyond the former “just retrain them all” approach generally undertaken when factories move, or shut down, to very mixed results,

One “solution” involves redefined roles for teachers, and greatly increased roles for community resources such as Promotores, and restructuring of healthcare to implement what “locals” and family can contribute to preventive medicine and ongoing support of getting the right care.
